Pedro Atanasio Bocanegra (born May 12, 1638 – died 1688) was a talented Spanish painter from the city of Granada. He was known for his beautiful artworks during a time called the Baroque period.

A Painter's Life

Pedro Atanasio Bocanegra learned his painting skills from famous artists like Alonso Cano and Juan de Sevilla Romero. He also got better at using colors by studying the works of Pedro de Moya and Anthony van Dyck. Van Dyck was a very well-known painter from the Netherlands.

Bocanegra created many important paintings. For example, in Granada, he painted a picture called 'The Conception' for the Nuestra Senora de Gracia cloister. One of his most admired works, 'The Conversion of St. Paul', can be found at the College of the Jesuits.

Pedro Bocanegra was very confident in his abilities. He often boasted that he was better than all the other artists of his time. However, when another artist named Matias de Torres challenged him to a painting contest, Bocanegra chose not to compete and left Madrid.

Even with his strong personality, his paintings were highly sought after. Many art collectors wanted to own at least one of his works. Pedro Atanasio Bocanegra passed away in Granada in 1688. One of his paintings, 'The Death of St. Clara', is now in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
