Pedro Carbo is a town in Ecuador, located in the coastal Guayas Province. It's pretty close to the Manabí Province. You can find it about 63 kilometers (39 miles) from Guayaquil, on the road to Manabí.

This town is the main center, or "seat," of the Pedro Carbo Canton. The canton was officially created in 1984. In 2022, about 24,882 people lived in the town. The town gets its name from Pedro Carbo Noboa, an important politician, diplomat, and writer from the 1800s.

History of Pedro Carbo Town

From Rio Nuevo to Pedro Carbo

The area where Pedro Carbo is now was once called "Rio Nuevo." This was an important town within a larger area known as "San Juan de Soledad." Today, San Juan de Soledad is the town of Isidro Ayora, located east of Pedro Carbo.

On August 1, 1893, the name of Rio Nuevo was changed to Caamaño. It became a rural "parroquia," which is like a small district, of the Daule canton. Daule is located to the east.

Official Name Change and Canton Creation

The town kept the name Caamaño until 1895. During a time of big political change called the Liberal Revolution, its name was changed again. This time, it was named to honor Pedro Carbo Noboa. In 1897, this name change was officially written down in the Territorial Division Law.

Finally, on July 12, 1984, the president of Ecuador, Oswaldo Hurtado Larrea, announced something big. He declared that Pedro Carbo would become its own "Cantón." This official decision was published on July 19, 1984.

Who Was Pedro Carbo Noboa?

Pedro Carbo Noboa was a very important person in Ecuador's history. He was a politician, a diplomat (someone who handles relations between countries), and a writer. He was born in Guayaquil on March 19, 1813. His parents were Coronel José Carbo Unzueta and Mrs. Josefa Noboa.

Pedro Carbo grew up in Guayaquil. For a while, he lived in Mexico before returning home. He became known to the public in 1835. This was when he was chosen as a top official for the Ministry of Interior and Exterior Relations.

Pedro Carbo's Political Career

Pedro Carbo held many important political jobs. He was a secretary for different commissions and worked on business deals with other countries like New Granada and Peru.

In 1845, he became the General Minister of the Provisional Government. This happened after a big political event called the Marxist Revolution. He also helped negotiate the terms for an important agreement called the Virginia Treaty.

He represented his home province of Guayas in the National Convention in 1845. Later, he represented other provinces like Pinchincha and Chimborazo in various meetings. In 1864, people suggested he run for president. However, he chose not to. Instead, he focused on speaking out against the government of Gabriel García Moreno. Because of this, he had to leave Ecuador and live in Paris and then Peru. He passed away on December 24, 1894.
