Peter V (Portuguese: Pedro V; September 16, 1837 – November 11, 1861) was the King of Portugal from 1853 to 1861. He was often called "the Hopeful" (Portuguese: o Esperançoso). He was known for bringing many new ideas and changes to his country.

Early Life and Becoming King

Peter was the oldest son of Queen Maria II and King Ferdinand II. This meant he was part of the House of Braganza, a very important royal family. As the first in line to the throne, he was known as the Prince Royal. He also held the title of the 23rd Duke of Braganza.
Peter became king in 1853 when he was just 16 years old. His father, Ferdinand II, helped guide him during the first two years of his rule. Peter was a very dedicated and hard-working king. He wanted to make Portugal a modern country.
Modernizing Portugal
King Peter V focused on improving Portugal's daily life. He worked to build new roads, telegraph lines, and railways. These changes made it easier for people to travel and communicate. He also made big improvements in public health.
His people loved him, especially during a serious cholera outbreak between 1853 and 1856. Cholera is a dangerous disease that can spread quickly. During this time, King Peter visited hospitals himself. He gave gifts and comforted those who were sick. This showed how much he cared for his people.
Sadly, King Peter V died in 1861. He, along with his brothers Fernando and João, and other family members, passed away from typhoid fever or cholera.
Marriage and Succession
King Peter V married Princess Stephanie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. She was the oldest daughter of Prince Karl Anton. Their marriage happened in two parts. First, they had a ceremony by proxy in Berlin on April 29, 1858. This means someone stood in for one of them. Then, they had a personal ceremony in Lisbon on May 18, 1858.
Their marriage was a happy one, but it was very short. Queen Stephanie died just one year later from diphtheria. Diphtheria is a serious infection that can make it hard to breathe.
Peter and Stephanie did not have any children. Because of this, when King Peter V passed away, the throne went to his younger brother, Luís.

King Peter V had many official titles and honours during his life. These titles showed his royal position and importance.
