Pedro de Ortega y Sotomayor was an important leader in the Catholic Church. He served as a bishop in Peru during the 1600s. A bishop is a high-ranking priest who oversees a group of churches in a specific area. Pedro de Ortega y Sotomayor was a bishop in three different cities: Trujillo, Arequipa, and Cuzco. He passed away in 1658.

His Journey as a Bishop

Pedro de Ortega y Sotomayor was born in Lima, Peru. His journey to becoming a bishop began in 1645.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1645, the King of Spain chose Pedro de Ortega y Sotomayor to be the Bishop of Trujillo. A few months later, Pope Innocent X officially approved this choice. The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church.

On September 30, 1646, he was formally made a bishop. This special ceremony is called a consecration. It was performed by Pedro de Villagómez Vivanco, who was the Archbishop of Lima. An archbishop is a bishop of the highest rank.

Serving in Different Cities

After serving in Trujillo, Pedro de Ortega y Sotomayor was appointed to a new role. In December 1647, Pope Innocent X made him the Bishop of Arequipa.

His final appointment came in November 1651. Pope Innocent X chose him to be the Bishop of Cuzco. He continued to serve the people of Cuzco as their bishop until he died in 1658.
