Pedro de Zubiaur (1540 – 3 August 1605) was a brave Spanish naval officer. He was a general in the Spanish Navy. He became famous for his actions during the Anglo-Spanish War.
Life and Early Career
Pedro de Zubiaur was born in 1540. His family came from Biscay, a region in Spain. Many people in his family were sailors.
He started his naval career in 1568. He sailed between the ports of Bilbao in Spain and Flanders. Flanders is a region in what is now Belgium. During this time, he worked under the command of the Duke of Alba.
Becoming a General
Pedro de Zubiaur was very good at his job. He achieved many things in the Low Countries. Because of his success, he was promoted to General.
He fought for Philip II of Spain, the King of Spain. He won several battles against the English. These battles happened during the Brittany campaign. One of his most famous victories was during the relief of Blaye.
In 1597, he captured six English ships. These ships were part of Raleigh's fleet. He found them near Cape Finisterre.
Later Years and Death
After the war, in 1605, Pedro de Zubiaur was given a new mission. He was put in charge of 18 ships. His task was to transport troops to Dunkirk.
On their way, his fleet met a large Dutch fleet. The Dutch had 80 ships. Their admiral was named Hatwain. A big battle started between the two fleets.
During the fight, Zubiaur was seriously hurt. His fleet lost two ships and 400 men. He managed to find safety in Dover, England. The English artillery protected his ships. At this time, England was allied with Spain.
However, his injuries were very serious. He died in Dover a few days later. His body was then taken to Bilbao, Spain, for burial.
