Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pedro de los Ríos y Gutiérrez de Aguayo (died 1547) was a Spanish official who served as a governor in the early days of Spanish control in Central America. He took over from Pedrarias Dávila as governor of Castilla del Oro (a Spanish territory that included parts of modern-day Panama) from 1526 to 1529. He was also governor of Nicaragua from 1526 to 1527. Pedro de los Ríos was born in Córdoba, Spain. His parents were Diego Gutiérrez de los Ríos y González de Hoces and Elvira Gutiérrez de Aguayo y López de Montemayor.

Governor in Central America

Pedro de los Ríos was named governor of Castilla del Oro in May 1526. He officially started his job in July of the same year. Later, he moved to Nicaragua. The local leaders there trusted him and also made him governor of that region.

However, the governor of Honduras, Diego López de Salcedo, soon arrived in León, Nicaragua. He made Ríos leave his post in Nicaragua and go back to Castilla del Oro.

After several years, Pedro de los Ríos was removed from his job as governor of Castilla del Oro in August 1529. Antonio de la Gama took over from him.

Life in Peru

Once his work in Central America was done, Pedro de los Ríos decided to join Francisco Pizarro. Pizarro was exploring and conquering new lands in Peru. Ríos traveled to the Inca capital city of Cuzco and was one of the first Spanish people to settle there.

Ríos supported Pizarro's forces in their conflicts. He fought against the Spanish King's early attempts to take full control of Peru. He took part in the Battle of Chupas in 1542. Several years later, he died fighting in the Battle of Huarina. This battle took place near Lake Titicaca on October 27, 1547.
