About Peep and the Big Wide World
The show follows the adventures of three main characters: Peep, a little yellow chick; Chirp, a robin; and Quack, a duck. They explore the world around them, asking questions and discovering how things work. The stories are designed to teach kids about basic science ideas like light, sound, shadows, and how animals behave.
How the Show Started
Peep and the Big Wide World is based on an older short film from 1988 with the same name. That film was made by the National Film Board of Canada. Even before that, the idea came from a 1962 short film called The Peep Show, also made by the National Film Board of Canada. So, the show has a long history!
When and Where to Watch It
The TV show first aired on April 17, 2004. In the United States, you could watch it on Discovery Kids and TLC as part of their Ready Set Learn block for children. In Canada, it premiered on TVOKids on the same day.
Many companies helped make the show, including WGBH-TV, 9 Story Entertainment, Eggbox LLC, Alliance Atlantis, and Discovery Kids.
The show stopped being shown on Discovery children's networks in 2010. This happened when Ready Set Learn ended and Discovery Kids changed to The Hub (which is now Discovery Family). However, the show is still available to public television stations today.
What Happens in Each Episode?
Every episode of Peep and the Big Wide World has two parts. First, there are two animated stories, each about nine minutes long. These stories show Peep, Chirp, and Quack exploring a science topic. After each animated story, there's a two-minute live-action part. In these live-action segments, real children explore and show examples of the same science topic that was in the cartoon. This helps kids see how the science ideas work in the real world.
