Peggy Napangardi Jones (1951 – 20 August 2014) was an important Australian Aboriginal artist. She was a Warlpiri and Warumungu woman, born near Tennant Creek. Peggy Jones had many art shows, including 10 solo exhibitions and about 50 group exhibitions. Her artworks are now part of many important collections around the world.

Early Life and Art Journey

Peggy Jones was born at Phillip Creek Station. Her mother was Warlpiri, and her father was Warumungu. From them, she learned many traditional stories and laws, which later inspired her paintings.

When she was young, her family often traveled between different stations, including Brunchilly Station and Banka Banka Station. Her mother worked at Brunchilly. Later, as a young woman, Peggy moved to Alekerenge (also known as Ali Curung). There, she met and married a Warumungu man. In 1970, they moved to Tennant Creek, where their three children were born.

Peggy started painting with acrylics on canvas in 1996. She joined an art program in Tennant Creek. Her first paintings used a classic "dot and circle" style. They showed her connection to her homeland, featuring places like waterholes, bush tucker (native foods), animals, and birds. Her artworks are known for their bright colors and lively feel.

Art Techniques and Collections

Throughout her career, Peggy Jones spent time at different art institutions, like the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education and Charles Darwin University. During these times, she learned to work with various art forms. She explored silk painting, ceramics, and lino block printing, which helped her create different types of art.

Peggy Jones called herself "the artist of all time." She was represented by the Alcaston Gallery in Melbourne for many years until she retired in 2011. She passed away on August 20, 2014.
