The Pelvicachromis taeniatus, also known as the Slender krib, is a type of cichlid fish. It lives in rivers in countries like Benin and Nigeria. Sometimes, people keep these fish as pets in aquariums.
These fish prefer rivers with soft water. They can grow to about 7.1 centimeters (2.8 inches) long. Slender kribs come in many different colors and patterns. These differences depend on where the fish live. People often name these types after the places they were found, like "Nigerian red" or "Moliwe."
Slender Krib Family
For a long time, scientists thought that Slender kribs found in Cameroon were the same species as those in Nigeria. But in 2014, a study by some scientists named Lamboj, Bartel, and dell’Ampio changed this idea.
They found that the fish from Cameroon were actually different species. These were named Pelvicachromis kribensis and Pelvicachromis drachenfelsi. Even though they are different species, these three fish (P. taeniatus, P. kribensis, and P. drachenfelsi) are very closely related. Scientists call them the "P. taeniatus group."
Courtship and Reproduction
When Slender kribs are ready to find a mate, the female fish do something special. They show off their large, bright purple pelvic fin. This fin is very colorful and catches the eye.
Scientists have studied how these fish choose their partners. They found that male Slender kribs really like females with bigger pelvic fins. It seems that these fins grow much larger than other fins on the female fish, making them stand out even more. This helps the males pick the females they want to mate with.
