Pendleton Brook passing through Pendleton

Pendleton Brook is a small river in Lancashire, England. It starts high up on Pendleton Moor. The brook then flows through the pretty village of Pendleton. It travels towards the north-west to a place called Higher Standen. After that, it goes west past Standen Hall.

From Standen Hall, Pendleton Brook flows south of the town of Clitheroe. Finally, it joins the larger River Ribble near a spot called Siddows.

What is Pendleton Brook?

Pendleton Brook is an important part of the local landscape. It helps carry water from the hills down to bigger rivers. This small river is home to many plants and animals. It also provides water for the areas it flows through.

Where Does the Water Come From?

Rivers and brooks get their water from different sources. Pendleton Brook starts on Pendleton Moor. This is a high, open area where rain collects. The water then flows downhill, forming the brook.

Other Streams Joining Pendleton Brook

Smaller streams often join bigger rivers. These smaller streams are called tributaries. Pendleton Brook has a few tributaries that add to its flow.

Mearley Brook

Mearley Brook is one of these important tributaries. It starts on Worston Moor and flows west. Mearley Brook reaches the town of Clitheroe. Here, it is joined by another stream called Worston Brook. Worston Brook itself gets water from Rad Brook. Rad Brook drains water from Downham Moor.

Mearley Brook then turns south through Clitheroe. In Clitheroe, it meets Shaw Brook. Shaw Brook brings water from the south side of High Moor. Mearley Brook continues its journey. It even helps fill a reservoir at Primrose. Finally, Mearley Brook joins Pendleton Brook south of Clitheroe.

Howcroft Brook

Another stream that joins Pendleton Brook is Howcroft Brook. This brook flows south from Ashendean Clough. It runs beneath Pendle Moor. Howcroft Brook then goes around the south side of Mearley Moor. It moves westwards and meets Pendleton Brook. This meeting happens just before Pendleton Brook reaches Higher Standen.
