The Penelakut First Nation is a self-governing group of Indigenous people who live on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. They are part of the larger Coast Salish people. The Penelakut First Nation works to represent its people and manage their lands and resources.
Who are the Penelakut?
The Penelakut First Nation is made up of six main communities, or tribes. These tribes are the Chemainus First Nation, Cowichan Tribes, Halalt First Nation, Lake Cowichan First Nation, Lyackson First Nation, and the Penelakut Tribe. All of these groups share a common language called Hul'qumi'num.
How Many Penelakut People Are There?
The Penelakut First Nation has many members. As of the latest count, there are 859 people who are officially part of the Penelakut First Nation.
