Peninsula Park's Rose Garden
Peninsula Park became very special in 1909. It was chosen to be the city's first public rose garden. The city bought the land for $60,000. This money came from a special fund raised in 1908.
Designing the Rose Garden
A talented person named Emanuel L. Mische designed the garden. It covers about two acres. That's like one and a half football fields! The garden is home to 5,700 roses. These roses come in 75 different types.
The Official Portland Rose
The official rose of Portland is called Mme. Caroline Testout. This special rose was grown right here at Peninsula Park.
Rose Shows at the Park
In 1913, Peninsula Park was picked for an important event. It hosted the yearly rose show. The show stayed there for a few years. Later, in 1917, the show moved. It went to Washington Park. That's where the famous International Rose Test Garden is now.
