The Penn State Berkey Creamery is a very popular spot at Pennsylvania State University. It's known for making delicious ice cream, sherbet, and cheese. All these yummy treats are made by students and experts in the university's Food Science Department.

It's actually the biggest university creamery in the whole United States. They use about 4.5 million pounds of milk every year. Most of this milk comes from the university's own dairy cows. People love their ice cream, especially the 750,000 hand-dipped cones they sell each year. They have over 100 amazing flavors, made with special ingredients from all over the world.

A Sweet History

The first Creamery opened way back in 1865. They started teaching dairy courses in 1892. Ice cream became a part of football weekend traditions in 1896. That's when Creamery ice cream was first sold to the public.

By 1932, the Creamery was buying milk from many local farmers. They were selling ice cream in both State College and Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Famous Ice Cream Makers

Did you know that Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield from Ben & Jerry's learned about ice cream at Penn State? They took a special course in 1978. This course taught them the basics of making ice cream.

In the 1980s, the Creamery used three million pounds of milk each year. By 2004, they supplied the university dining halls with over 225,000 gallons of milk. That same year, they made 200,000 pounds of cheese and 225,000 gallons of ice cream.

A Special Presidential Visit

Only one U.S. President has ever been allowed to mix different flavors of Creamery ice cream. That was Bill Clinton. The Creamery usually doesn't let people mix flavors in one cone or cup.

President Clinton asked for Cherry Quist and Peachy Paterno flavors together. However, when he came back after being President, they wouldn't let him mix flavors anymore!

A New Home

The Creamery moved to a new building in 2006. Its old home was in Borland Laboratory for a long time. The new location is in the Food Science Building. It's closer to Beaver Stadium and student dorms.

When the move was first announced, some students protested. But these protests eventually stopped. The new Creamery facility is named the Berkey Creamery. This is to honor the Berkey family. They gave a lot of money to help build the Food Science Building.

There are five ice cream flavors that are always the most popular. These are Vanilla, Bittersweet Mint, Peanut Butter Swirl, Peachy Paterno, and Butter Pecan.
