Pennsylvania is a lovely suburb located in the city of Exeter, England. It sits on high ground to the north of the city center. This area is nestled between the old deer park of Duryard and Stoke Hill.
The suburb got its name from the US state. A banker named Joseph Sparkes, who was a Quaker, built the first group of houses here around 1821. He called this first part Pennsylvania Park.

Pennsylvania is known for its different types of homes. On the southern side, closer to Exeter city, you can see many large houses. These were built in the late Victorian and Edwardian times.

As you go further north, up the steeper hills, the houses change. Most homes here were built between the 1920s and 1970s. There are also some newer housing areas on the very edge of the city.
Pennsylvania and Exeter University
Pennsylvania is very popular with students and teachers. This is because it's easy to walk to the Exeter University from here. A famous author, J. K. Rowling, lived in Pennsylvania. She was a student at Exeter University in the late 1980s.
