Kaarlo Pentti Linkola (born December 7, 1932 – died April 5, 2020) was a famous Finnish thinker. He was known for his strong views on protecting nature. Linkola was also an ornithologist, which means he studied birds. He was a writer and a fisherman for many years.

Linkola believed that humans were causing a lot of damage to the environment. He thought that the world's population was too large. He felt that reducing the number of people could help solve environmental problems.

About Pentti Linkola

Linkola was born in Helsinki, Finland, in 1932. He spent his summers at his grandfather's farm. His father, Kaarlo Linkola, was a botanist and a university rector. His grandfather, Hugo Suolahti, was also a university chancellor. Pentti had an older sister, Aira, and a younger brother, Martti. His half-brother, Anssi, died in a war in 1941. His father and grandfather also passed away a few years later.

After finishing school in 1950, Linkola studied biology. He became a researcher and observed birds in the Åland Islands. Even though he was a well-known bird expert, he decided to become a fisherman. He wanted to live a simple life that matched his beliefs about nature.

Linkola was involved in the Koijärvi Movement in 1979. This was a group that worked to protect a lake. However, his ideas were often seen as too extreme for regular environmental groups.

Protecting Nature

In 1995, Linkola started the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation. This group works to save old forests in southern Finland. They also focus on other types of nature conservation. The foundation gets money from people and companies. They use this money to buy special forest areas to protect them. By 2017, the foundation had bought 62 protected areas. These areas covered about 145 hectares (about 358 acres).

In 2018, Linkola was recognized for his work. A national poll in Finland named him the person who had done the most to protect Finland's nature. He died peacefully at his home in 2020.

Pentti Linkola's Ideas

Linkola had very strong opinions about the environment. He believed that only big changes could stop the planet from being destroyed. He felt that humans should not survive if it meant harming the entire natural world.

He wrote a lot about the environmental damage he saw. He was very concerned about how humans were affecting the Earth. Linkola was happy to see young activists like Greta Thunberg speaking up for the environment. He said he followed her work closely and admired her passion.
