History of the People's Fair
The People's Fair was one of many free events that happened every year in Denver. The very first fair took place in 1972. It was held at Morey Junior High School, which is now called Morey Middle School. About 2,000 people came to that first event.
Growing Bigger and Moving Locations
The fair quickly became very popular. Within just five years, it grew too big for the junior high school. So, it moved to East High School. In 1987, the People's Fair found its final home. It moved to the large and beautiful Civic Center Park. This park is located right between the Colorado State Capitol building and the City and County Building in Denver.
What You Could Find at the Fair
At its busiest times, the People's Fair had around 500 different booths. Many of these booths sold tasty food. But the main focus of the fair was on arts and crafts. This was a "juried" event, which means that artists and crafters had to be chosen by a panel of judges to show their work. This made sure that only high-quality items were sold.
Arts, Music, and Fun Activities
The group that sponsored the fair, CHUN, called it "Colorado's Premier Arts and Crafts Festival." Besides the amazing art, there were always several bands playing live music on different stages. People could enjoy all kinds of music as they walked around. There were also carnival rides set up in one part of the fairgrounds, adding to the fun and excitement for everyone.
How the Fair Helped the Community
A very important part of the People's Fair was its goal to help local community groups. These groups are often called non-profit organizations. A non-profit organization is a group that works to help others or a cause, rather than trying to make money for itself.
Supporting Non-Profits Through Sales
The fair helped these non-profit organizations by having special drink booths. Volunteers from different non-profit groups would work at these booths. A part of the money made from selling drinks would then go directly to their organization. This was a great way for the fair to support many different good causes in the Denver area.
The End of an Era
The last People's Fair was held in 2018. In 2019, it was announced that the event would not happen that year. After many years of bringing art, music, and community spirit to Denver, the People's Fair came to an end.
