Pequea (pronounced "Peck-way") is a small community in Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. It's not a big city but an unincorporated community, meaning it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. You can find Pequea right where Route 324 ends at the Susquehanna River, about twelve miles south of the city of Lancaster.

A Look Back at Pequea

Around the year 1877, two people named Frederick Shoff and Paul Heine started to make Pequea a popular place to visit. Back then, it was often called "Shoff's P.O." People began coming to Pequea when the Columbia and Port Deposit Railroad started bringing passengers to the area. Mr. Shoff owned a sawmill and a lumber yard. He also managed a power company nearby.

The Famous Riverview Hotel

Between 1902 and 1903, Mr. Shoff built a huge hotel called the Riverview Hotel. It was three stories tall and had seventy-five bedrooms! This grand hotel was located right on the bank of the Susquehanna River. In 1904, Mr. Shoff sold the hotel to Paul Heine.

The Riverview Hotel was a fun place to stay. It had a dining room, a banquet hall for parties, and a summer garden. Guests could also enjoy tennis courts, croquet courts, and swings with canopies. There was even a miniature railway that went to York Furnace. This tiny train used a steam locomotive made by Timothy Cagney and his brothers, David and John.
