Percilla, also known as Evergreen, is a small, quiet community in Houston County, Texas, United States. It is not a city with its own government. Instead, it is an unincorporated community. In the year 2000, about 95 people lived in Percilla.
History of Percilla
Percilla started as a small settlement just before the American Civil War. In 1879, a church called Evergreen Church opened there. For much of the 1880s, the community was known as Evergreen.
In 1891, the people living there wanted to open a post office. They asked for the town's name to be changed to Procilla. This was to honor an early pioneer named J. M. Procilla (or Procella). However, postal workers made a mistake and wrote the name as Percilla. The community has kept this spelling ever since.
By 1896, Percilla had grown a bit. It had two general stores and three churches: Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian. About 25 people lived there at that time. In the mid-1930s, Percilla still had a church, a cemetery, and four businesses. The population was estimated to be around 50 people in 1936.
By the mid-1970s, Percilla's population grew to about 100 people. In 1990, it was still a rural village with a church, a community center, a cemetery, and scattered homes. The population was reported to be 95 that year. This number remained the same in 2000.
