Sir Percy Clarke Hull (born October 27, 1878, in Hereford, England; died August 31, 1968, in Farnham, Surrey) was a famous English organist and composer. He is best known for bringing the important Three Choirs Festival back to life. He did this while he was the main organist at Hereford Cathedral from 1918 to 1949.

Percy Hull was friends with two very famous composers: Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Edward Elgar even dedicated one of his well-known pieces, the fifth of his Pomp and Circumstance Marches, to him. Percy Hull also helped with the very first performances of Ralph Vaughan Williams' Two Hymn Preludes and Prelude and Fugue in C minor for Orchestra.

Early Life and Musical Training

Percy Hull started his musical journey as a young singer, called a chorister. He sang at Hereford Cathedral. There, he learned from two important musicians: Langdon Colborne and George Robertson Sinclair.

Later, he became a student of Dr. Sinclair. He also worked as an assistant organist at Hereford Cathedral. This was from 1896 until 1914.

Challenges During World War I

When World War I began, Percy Hull was in Germany. Because he was English, he was held as a civilian prisoner of war. He was kept at a place called the Ruhleben internment camp.

After the war ended, on Armistice Day in 1918, he was appointed the main organist of Hereford Cathedral.

A Leader in Music

Percy Hull was a very important person in the world of music. He worked hard to bring back the Three Choirs Festival. This festival is a big event for music lovers. It features choirs and orchestras.

After World War II, he worked even harder to revive this festival. His efforts were very successful.

Recognition and Legacy

In 1947, Percy Hull was honored for all his hard work. He was made a knight by the King. This meant he could use the title "Sir" before his name. He received this honor for his great contributions to music.

Sir Percy Clarke Hull passed away in 1968. He is remembered for his talent as an organist and composer. He is also remembered for his dedication to the Three Choirs Festival. His work helped keep classical music alive and well in England.
