Pere March (born around 1336-1338, died June 7, 1413) was a famous Valencian poet. He was also the father of another well-known poet, Ausiàs March. His nephew was Arnau March.
His Family's Story
Pere March came from an important family. His family members were often lawyers and worked for the royal court. They served the king in the Kingdom of Aragon. Pere was born in Valencia. He was likely the younger brother of Jaume March II. Jaume inherited the family's lands near Barcelona.
Working for the Royal Court
Pere March worked for the royal family for many years. First, he served Peter, who was the younger brother of King Alfonso IV. Peter was a high-ranking official in Catalonia. Later, Pere worked for Peter's son, Alfonso, who was the Duke of Gandia. He also served Alfonso's son, who was also named Alfonso.
Pere took on several important jobs as a diplomat. He traveled to England twice in the 1380s for the first Alfonso. Later, he worked for the second Alfonso during a time when there was no king, after King Martin I died. Because of his excellent service, Pere was made a knight.
His Final Resting Place
Pere March died in Balaguer in 1413. After his death, his body was moved. He was buried in the Monastery of Sant Jeroni de Cotalba. This monastery is located in Alfahuir, in the Valencian Province.
His Poems
Pere March wrote several poems. He also wrote some verses with his brother Jaume. Three of Pere March's most important poems are still known today:
