Playing Career Highlights
Periko Alonso was born in Tolosa, a town in Gipuzkoa, Spain. He played professionally for Real Sociedad, Barcelona, and Sabadell.
Success with Real Sociedad
With Real Sociedad, Periko was a key player. He helped his team win the La Liga championship two times in a row, in the 1980–81 and 1981–82 seasons. He played almost every game and scored about five goals each season during these championship years.
Playing for Spain
While playing for Real Sociedad, Periko earned 19 of his 20 caps (appearances) for the Spanish national team. His first game for Spain was on September 24, 1980. It was a friendly match against Hungary in Budapest, which ended in a 2–2 draw. He scored one goal for Spain in a friendly match against Poland in 1981.
Time at Barcelona and Sabadell
In the 1982–83 season, Periko joined Barcelona. He had stopped playing for the national team after the World Cup that year. He didn't play as much during most of his time at Barcelona.
However, he did win the league championship with Barcelona in his final year there. After Barcelona, he moved to Sabadell in 1985. He helped Sabadell get promoted from the Segunda División (second division) in his first season. In his second season, he scored 12 goals, which was his best scoring year. Even though his team was near the bottom, they managed to stay in the top league. He retired from playing football in 1988.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Periko Alonso immediately started working as a manager. He mainly coached teams in the Basque Country. In 2000, he had a chance to coach his former club, Real Sociedad.
Before that, he had a tough time coaching Hércules, and the team went down to a lower league. At Real Sociedad, he only coached for ten games before he stopped coaching football.
