History of Perrysville Village
The first people settled in the Perrysville area in 1810. But the village itself wasn't officially planned until 1812. One early settler, Judge Coulter, chose a beautiful spot for the village. His neighbors jokingly called it "Coulterville."
Naming the Village
Perrysville was first called Freeport. It was officially laid out under that name in 1815. Later, the name changed to honor Oliver Hazard Perry. He was a famous American naval leader. Perry is known for his big victory at the Battle of Lake Erie. A post office opened in 1820, first named Perryville. In 1883, its name changed to Perrysville.

Perrysville has a long history of schooling. Today, it is part of the Loudonville-Perrysville Exempted Village School District.
Early Schools in Perrysville
Public schooling started in Perrysville in 1816. The first schoolhouse was built then. Before that, teachers taught students in private homes. School was only held in the summer because it was hard to travel in winter.
Academies and New Buildings
In 1865, an academy opened in Perrysville. Academies offered more advanced learning than regular public schools. This academy taught 45 students. A new building for the academy was built in 1869. It operated for 26 years until it burned down in 1895.
The second Perrysville schoolhouse was built in 1871. The third one followed in 1882.
The Last Schoolhouse and Mergers
The fourth and final schoolhouse was built in 1924. Students from all over Green Township came to Perrysville High School. The school colors were red and white. Their mascot was an "Admiral," honoring Oliver Hazard Perry. The school had successful sports teams, including basketball, baseball, and football.
Perrysville schools operated independently for 145 years. In 1961, Perrysville High School had its last graduating class. The Perrysville and Loudonville school districts then merged. This created the Loudonville-Perrysville Exempted Village School District. This merger helped keep the schools open. From 1988, the old Perrysville High School building became Perrysville Junior High.
