Persicaria bicornis is a type of flowering plant found in North America. It is often called pink smartweed because of its pretty pink flowers. This plant belongs to the buckwheat family. You can find it in the central and southwestern parts of the United States. It grows from Texas all the way to Arizona, and up to Wyoming and Illinois.

About Pink Smartweed

What Does Pink Smartweed Look Like?

Pink smartweed is an annual plant, which means it lives for only one growing season. It can grow quite tall, up to about 180 cm (5.9 ft), which is almost 6 feet!

Its leaves are long and narrow, shaped like a spearhead. They can be up to 18 cm (7 in) (about 7 inches) long. The plant has clusters of small, bright pink flowers. Each flower has 5 pink parts called tepals.

Flower Details

Inside the pink flowers, you'll find 6 to 8 stamens. These are the parts that produce pollen, and they have pink or red tips called anthers. The flowers also have one pistil, which is the female part of the flower. From the base of the flower, 2 or 3 styles stick out. The edges of the blooms look like they have fringes.

It can be tricky to tell pink smartweed apart from a similar plant, P. pensylvanica. However, pink smartweed has narrower leaves, which helps to identify it.

Where Does Pink Smartweed Grow?

This plant is native to North America. You can find it in many states, including Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas.

Pink smartweed likes to grow in places where the ground has been disturbed. This includes moist ditches, along the edges of ponds, and near reservoirs. It usually blooms and grows from June through October.

Uses of Pink Smartweed

Currently, there are no known human uses for the pink smartweed plant.
