Persoonia kararae is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to a plant family called Proteaceae. This plant is special because it is endemic to the Perenjori area in Western Australia. This means it grows naturally only in that specific place.
Persoonia kararae is a shrub that grows upright and spreads out. Its young branches are covered in thick hairs. It has long, thin leaves and yellow flowers. These flowers grow in groups of up to ten on a stem part called a rachis.
What Does It Look Like?
Persoonia kararae is an upright, spreading shrub. It usually grows to be about 1 to 5 meters (3 to 16 feet) tall. Its young branches are very hairy.
The leaves grow one after another along the stem. They are long and flat, about 80 to 140 millimeters (3 to 5.5 inches) long. They are also about 3 to 3.5 millimeters (0.12 to 0.14 inches) wide. The leaves feel leathery but are also soft and flexible.
The yellow flowers usually grow alone or in groups of up to ten. Each group is on a short stem called a rachis, which is up to 10 millimeters (0.4 inches) long. Each flower sits on a hairy stalk called a pedicel, which is 5 to 7 millimeters (0.2 to 0.3 inches) long.
The flower parts, called tepals, are yellow and hairy on the outside. They are about 11.5 to 13.5 millimeters (0.45 to 0.53 inches) long. The bottom tepal is shaped like a small bag. Inside the flower, there are yellow anthers, which hold the pollen.
This plant flowers from September to November. After flowering, it produces a smooth, fleshy fruit called a drupe.
How It Was Named
Persoonia kararae was first officially described in 1994. A scientist named Peter Weston wrote about it in a science journal called Telopea. He described it using plant samples collected by Ernst Wittwer in 1975. These samples were found near the Karara boundary gate.
Where It Lives
This special plant, also known as a geebung, is only found in two places. Both locations are on Karara Station in the Perenjori area of Western Australia. This area is part of the Yalgoo biogeographic region. Karara Station is now part of the Karara and Lochada Important Bird Area.
Protecting This Plant
The Western Australian Government Department of Parks and Wildlife keeps track of plants like Persoonia kararae. They have classified this species as "Priority Two".
This classification means that not much is known about the plant. It has only been found in one or a few locations. This makes it important to protect these areas so the plant can continue to grow and thrive.
