Peter Colotka (born January 10, 1925 – died April 20, 2019) was a smart Slovak person. He worked as a teacher, a lawyer, and a politician. He was the Prime Minister of the Slovak Socialist Republic for many years, from 1969 to 1988.
Early Life and Education
Peter Colotka was born in a place called Sedliacka Dubová. This town is in the Dolný Kubín District of what was then Czechoslovakia. He was born on January 10, 1925.
He went to Comenius University in Bratislava. There, he studied law. He finished his studies and graduated in 1950.
His Career in Politics
After finishing university, Peter Colotka started working at the University of Bratislava. He taught law, focusing on civil and family law. From 1959 to 1961, he was a special leader at the university called a prorector. In 1964, he became a full professor of civil law.
From 1963 to 1968, he worked at the International Court of Justice. This important court is located in the Hague.
Peter Colotka was a member of two political groups. These were the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and the Slovak Communist Party. In 1968, he became a deputy prime minister for Czechoslovakia.
In January 1969, he was chosen for a big role. He became the president of the Czechoslovak Federal Assembly. He was a member of this Assembly from 1969 to 1989.
In April 1969, he joined a special group. This was the presidium of the Czechoslovak Communist Party. He also joined its central committee in May 1971. He was also part of the Slovak Communist Party's presidium and central committee.
On May 4, 1969, Peter Colotka became the Prime Minister. He led the government of the Slovak Socialist Republic. He also worked as the deputy prime minister of Czechoslovakia at the same time. He held these important jobs until October 12, 1988. After that, Ivan Knotek took over as Prime Minister. Colotka also left his role in the Czechoslovak Communist Party's presidium in October 1988.
Later in 1988, he became an ambassador. He represented Czechoslovakia in France. He worked as an ambassador until January 19, 1990.
Later Life and Death
Peter Colotka passed away on April 20, 2019. He was 94 years old when he died.
