Dr Peter Hennis (1802 – 18 May 1833) was a respected doctor. He was known as a hero during the cholera outbreak in Exeter in 1832. Sadly, he was also the last person known to die from a duel in Devon.

About Peter Hennis
Peter Hennis was born in Youghal, Ireland, in 1802. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He earned his degree as a Doctor of Medicine in 1825.
Life in Exeter
In 1830, Dr. Hennis moved to Exeter, England. On November 2, 1830, he started working as a doctor at the Exeter Dispensary. This was a place where people could get medical help.
Helping During Cholera
In 1832, Exeter faced a serious cholera outbreak. Cholera is a dangerous illness that spreads quickly. Dr. Hennis was chosen to be the medical officer for the poorest part of the city, the South District. He worked very hard and was known for his kindness. He helped many people during this difficult time.
The Duel and His Death
In May 1833, Dr. Hennis had a disagreement with Sir John Jeffcott. This led to a duel with pistols on May 10. Dr. Hennis was wounded during the duel. He sadly died from his injuries on May 18, 1833.
Public Reaction
The people of Exeter were very upset when Dr. Hennis died. He was greatly admired for his work during the cholera outbreak. About 250 important people attended his funeral at the Cathedral. An amazing 20,000 citizens lined the streets as his funeral procession went to St Sidwell's Church. This shows how much the people of Exeter respected and cared for him.
