About Peter Hill-Wood
Peter Hill-Wood was born in Kensington, London. His parents were Denis Hill-Wood and Mary Smith. His family had a strong connection to sports. His father, three uncles, and grandfather all played first-class cricket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club.
Peter went to Ludgrove School and Eton College. At Eton, he was classmates with Sir Roger Gibbs, who also became an Arsenal director later. After school, he served in the Coldstream Guards, a part of the British Army.
After his time in the Guards, Peter Hill-Wood started a career in banking. He worked at Hambros Bank and eventually became a vice-chairman there. He was in charge of the bank's investment division before that.
Leading Arsenal Football Club
Peter Hill-Wood was the third person in his family to become chairman of Arsenal. His grandfather, Samuel Hill-Wood, was chairman from 1929–1936 and again from 1946–1949. His father, Denis Hill-Wood, was chairman from 1962–1982.
Peter took over as chairman after his father passed away in 1982. He did not handle the daily running of the club. That was usually managed by David Dein and the team's managers.
He worked with Chips Keswick, who was also a director at Hambros Bank. Chips Keswick later joined the Arsenal board. He helped Arsenal get important connections in the business world, especially when the club needed money to build its new stadium.
Over time, Peter Hill-Wood sold many of his family's shares in the club. He sold some to former vice-chairman David Dein in the 1980s and 1990s. He sold the rest to Stan Kroenke. On June 14, 2013, Peter Hill-Wood stepped down as chairman. Chips Keswick took over his role.
