Peter of Luxembourg (1390 – 31 August 1433) was an important count who lived a long time ago. He was known as the Count of Saint-Pol. He also inherited other lands called Brienne and Conversano, which were also counties.

Peter's Family Background

Peter was the son of John of Luxembourg, Lord of Beauvoir and Marguerite of Enghien. His parents were also counts and countesses of Brienne for a few years. Peter was part of a famous family called the House of Luxembourg. This family was a French branch of the larger Luxembourg family tree. He was a descendant of Henry V, Count of Luxembourg.

Peter's Life and Marriage

Peter became the Count of Saint-Pol in 1430. He took over this role from his aunt, Jeanne of Luxembourg.

On May 8, 1405, Peter married Margaret de Baux. Margaret was the daughter of Francis of Baux. Peter and Margaret had eight children together. Their children grew up to have important lives and families of their own.

  • Louis of Luxembourg (1418 – 1475) was their oldest son. He became a count like his father. He married twice and had children.
  • Jacquetta of Luxembourg (1415/1416 – 1472) was a daughter who married two important men.
  • Thibaud of Luxembourg (died 1477) became a bishop. He also married and had children.
  • Jacques of Luxembourg (1426-1487) also married and had children.
  • Valeran of Luxembourg died when he was young.
  • Jean of Luxembourg died in Africa.
  • Catherine of Luxembourg (died 1492) married Arthur III, Duke of Brittany.
  • Isabelle of Luxembourg (died 1472) became the Countess of Guise. She married Charles, Count of Maine.

How Peter Died

Peter of Luxembourg died on August 31, 1433, when he was about 43 years old. He passed away in a place called Rambures, in France. He was buried in an abbey, which is like a monastery, in Cercamp.

Peter was one of many people who died from a terrible sickness called the Black Death. This sickness caused millions of deaths across Europe, including in Luxembourg, France, England, and Spain, starting in the 1300s. It kept appearing for many years after that. Peter's wife, Margaret, lived much longer than him. She died 36 years later.
