Marguerite d'Enghien was a powerful noblewoman born in 1365. She became a countess and lady in her own right, meaning she inherited these titles herself. She was the Countess of Brienne and Conversano. She was also the Lady of Enghien and Beauvois starting in 1394.
Life of Marguerite d'Enghien
Marguerite was born in 1365. She was the oldest daughter of Louis of Enghien, Count of Brienne and Giovanna of Sanseverino. Her father was a count and a lord. He was also known as the Duke of Athens.
Marguerite had a brother named Antoine. Sadly, Antoine died when he was only sixteen years old. Because he passed away, Marguerite became the heir to her father's lands and titles.
On March 17, 1394, Marguerite inherited her father's estates. She became the Countess of Brienne and Conversano. She also became the Lady of Enghien. This meant she held these important titles by her own right.
Her husband, John of Luxembourg, also became a Count because of her. He was known as the Count of Brienne and Conversano through his marriage to Marguerite.
Marguerite passed away at an unknown time after 1394. Her oldest son, Peter, later inherited her titles of Brienne and Conversano.
Marriages and Children
Marguerite d'Enghien was married three times during her life. Her first two marriages did not result in any children.
Her first husband was Pierre de Baux. After he passed away, she married Giacopo of Sanseverino. He was a relative of her mother.
In 1380, after Giacopo's death, Marguerite married her third husband. He was John of Luxembourg, Sire of Beauvois. He was born in 1370 and passed away in 1397. John was the son of Guy of Luxembourg.
Marguerite and John had five children together:
- Peter of Luxembourg (1390–1433): He became the Count of Saint-Pol in 1430. He also inherited his mother's titles of Brienne and Conversano. Peter married Margaret de Baux in 1405. They had nine children. One of their daughters was Jacquetta of Luxembourg. Jacquetta was the mother of Elizabeth Woodville, who became Queen of England.
- John II of Luxembourg, Count of Ligny (1392–1441): John inherited the title of Beauvois from his father. He also became the Count of Ligny. In 1418, he married Jeanne de Béthune. John was an ally of the English during the Hundred Years' War. He famously captured Joan of Arc and later sold her to the English.
- Louis of Luxembourg (died 1443): Louis was a very important church leader and statesman. He held many high positions. These included Cardinal, Archbishop of Rouen, and Chancellor of France. He was buried in Ely Cathedral.
- Catherine of Luxembourg (born around 1393)
- Jeanne of Luxembourg (died 1420): Jeanne married twice. Her first husband was Louis, Seigneur de Ghistelles. He was killed at the Battle of Agincourt. Her second husband was Jean IV, Viscount of Melun.
