Peter Joseph O'Reilly (born April 14, 1850 – died December 16, 1923) was a Catholic bishop born in Ireland. He later moved to the United States. He served as a special kind of bishop, called an auxiliary bishop, for the Diocese of Peoria from 1900 until 1923.
About Peter O'Reilly
Peter O'Reilly was born in a small village called Moynalty. This village is in County Meath, which was part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland at the time.
He became a priest on June 24, 1877. This was an important step in his religious life.
Becoming a Bishop
On July 3, 1900, Pope Pius X chose Peter O'Reilly for a new role. He was appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Peoria. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop of a diocese. He also received the title of Titular Bishop of a historical place called Lebedus.
On September 21, 1900, Peter O'Reilly was officially made a bishop. This special ceremony is called a consecration. Archbishop Sebastiano Martinelli performed the consecration. Archbishop Martinelli was a special representative of the Pope in the United States.
Two other bishops, Henry Cosgrove and James Ryan, also helped with the ceremony.
Later Life and Death
Bishop O'Reilly continued to serve as an auxiliary bishop for many years. He helped lead the Catholic community in the Diocese of Peoria.
He passed away on December 16, 1923. He was 73 years old at the time of his death.
