Sir Peter Maule: A Scottish Baron

Sir Peter Maule, who passed away in 1254, was the oldest son of Richard Maule of Fowlis. He became a significant figure in his time.

Family and Marriage

Around the year 1224, Peter Maule married Christina de Valognes. Christina was the daughter and only heir of William de Valognes. This marriage was very important for the Maule family. It meant that the lands known as the baronies of Panmure and Benvie became part of the Maule family's possessions.

Building Panmure Castle

It is believed that Peter Maule built Panmure Castle around 1224. This castle was the main home for the Maule family for many years. It served as their ancestral home, meaning it was passed down through generations. However, Panmure Castle was later replaced by Panmure House in the 17th century. The original castle was destroyed in 1336 by Andrew Murray during the Second War of Scottish Independence.

His Children

Sir Peter Maule had two sons. His oldest son, Sir William Maule, became his successor and took over the family's lands and titles. His second son was Sir Thomas Maule. Sadly, Sir Thomas Maule was killed in 1303 during a battle. This happened during the siege of Brechin castle, which was part of the First War of Scottish Independence.
