Peter Schmidhuber (born December 15, 1931 – died December 26, 2020) was an important German and European politician. He was a member of the CSU party, which is a political group in Bavaria, Germany.
Life Story
Peter Schmidhuber was born in Munich, a big city in Bavaria. He went to the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich starting in 1951. There, he studied law and economics. By 1960, he was allowed to work as a lawyer. From 1961 to 1966, he worked for the Bavarian State Finance Department. After that, he was a legal adviser until 1978.
He joined the Christian Social Union party in 1952. From 1960 to 1966, he was part of the Munich City Council, helping to make decisions for the city. He also served in the German Bundestag, which is like the main parliament of Germany, from 1965 to 1969 and again from 1972 to 1978.
In 1978, he was elected to the Bavarian state parliament and stayed there until 1987. During this time, he worked closely with Franz Josef Strauss, who was a regional minister. Schmidhuber also took part in committees that helped connect different parts of the German government and even the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
Working for Europe
From 1987 to 1995, Peter Schmidhuber worked in Brussels as a member of the European Commission. This is a very important group that helps run the European Union. He took over from another German politician, Alois Pfeiffer.
In the European Commission, Schmidhuber had several important jobs, called "portfolios."
- From 1987 to 1989, he was in charge of Economic Affairs and Employment. This meant he looked after how the economy was doing and helped create jobs.
- From 1989 to 1992, he managed the budget for the European Union. The budget is like a big spending plan.
- From 1993 to 1994, he continued to handle the budget and financial control. He also worked with the Cohesion Fund, which helps poorer regions in Europe grow.
After leaving the European Commission in 1995, Schmidhuber joined the Court of Directors of the Deutsche Bundesbank, which is Germany's national bank. Later, he worked for companies that focused on business law.
