Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Peter Spendelowe Lamborn (born in 1722, died in 1774) was a talented English artist. He was known for two main things: being an engraver and a miniature painter. An engraver creates pictures by cutting designs into metal plates, which are then used to print images. A miniature painter creates very small, detailed portraits.

Early Life and Training

Peter Lamborn was born in Cambridge in 1722. His father, John Lamborn, was a watchmaker. Peter moved to London to study engraving. He learned from a skilled engraver named Isaac Basire. After his training, Peter returned to Cambridge to start his own art career. He quickly became well-known there for his engraving work. He also showed great talent in painting tiny, detailed portraits.

Artistic Career and Exhibitions

Peter Lamborn became a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists in 1765. This was an important group for artists at the time. He started showing his artwork with them in 1764. His first exhibits included a miniature painting of a lady and a drawing of the church in St Neots, Huntingdonshire. He continued to exhibit his art every year until he passed away. His drawings of buildings were especially admired.

Lamborn engraved many different types of images. He created two sets of pictures showing university buildings in Cambridge. He also made a large picture of Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds, based on a work by John Kendall. He even engraved landscapes by famous artists like Poelenburg and Jan Both.

He also created the illustrations for several books. These included Sandby's edition of 'Juvenal' (1763), Bentham's 'History of Ely Cathedral' (1771), and Martyn and Lettice's 'Antiquities of Herculaneum' (1773).

Portraits and Legacy

Peter Lamborn also etched (a type of engraving) several portraits of important people. These included a portrait of Samuel Johnson, which he drew from life. He also etched portraits of Oliver Cromwell (from a painting at Sidney Sussex College), John Ives, F.R.S., Thomas Martin, F.R.S., and Dr. Richard Walker from Trinity College. You can find copies of these etchings in the print room at the British Museum.

On January 6, 1762, Lamborn married Mary Wale. They had three sons and one daughter. His daughter later married James and became the mother of James Lamborn Cock, who was a music publisher in London. Peter Lamborn died in Cambridge on November 5, 1774. A small portrait of him is owned by Mrs. Lamborn Cock.
