Peter Waage was a famous Norwegian chemist and a professor at the University of Kristiania (now called the University of Oslo). He was born on June 29, 1833, and passed away on January 13, 1900. Peter Waage is best known for working with his brother-in-law, Cato Maximilian Guldberg. Together, they discovered and developed the important law of mass action. This law helps us understand how chemical reactions happen.

Early Life and Education
Peter Waage grew up on Hidra Island in Norway. His parents were Peder Pedersen Waage and Regine Lovise Wathne. He went to the Bergen Cathedral School. After that, he studied chemistry and mineralogy at the University of Kristiania. One of his teachers was Adolph Strecker.
Awards and Further Studies
In 1858, Peter Waage won a special award called the Crown Prince's gold medal. He earned it for his work on how oxygen-containing acids are formed. The next year, in 1859, he finished his main university degree. After his studies, he traveled to France and Germany. He spent two years there learning more about chemistry. He even studied with the famous chemist Robert Bunsen in Heidelberg.
Becoming a Professor
In 1861, Waage became an associate professor at the University of Kristiania. Just five years later, in 1866, he was made a full professor of chemistry. He taught at the university for over 30 years, sharing his knowledge with many students.
Other Important Roles
Besides his work at the university, Peter Waage was also involved in other important groups. He was the chairman of the Norwegian Polytechnic Society from 1868 to 1869. He also helped start the Norwegian branch of the YMCA in 1880 and was its first chairman.
Personal Life
Peter Waage was married two times. His first wife was Johanne Christiane Tandberg Riddervold. They got married in 1862. After she passed away, he married Mathilde Sofie Guldberg in 1870. Mathilde was the sister of his research partner, Cato Guldberg.
