Peters Beach facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Peters Beach, sometimes called Peter Beach, used to be a narrow strip of land known as a barrier island. It was located along the Jersey Shore in New Jersey, right next to the Atlantic Ocean. Today, it's no longer a separate island. Instead, it has become a part of a larger island called Brigantine Island.

Geography

Where is Peters Beach?

Peters Beach is found on the southwest side of Brigantine Island. It is very close to a waterway called St. George's Thoroughfare. This area is now part of Brigantine City.

How Peters Beach Changed Over Time

Long ago, Peters Beach was its own island. In 1834, people described it as being on the Atlantic Ocean. It was near the mouth of Absecon Inlet and between Absecon Inlet and Quarters Inlet.

In 1828, Peters Beach was about 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) long. It stretched between these two inlets. But over the years, the ocean's waves and currents caused a lot of erosion. By 1878, Peters Beach had shrunk quite a bit. It was described as a "small sandhill island" with only a few acres. It was then located inside Brigantine Beach. This meant Brigantine Beach had grown outwards and surrounded it.

By 1904, Quarters Inlet had changed its shape. It curved in front of Peters Beach, separating it from Brigantine Island. This inlet became known as Quarter Channel. It no longer connected directly with the ocean. Instead, it connected with Absecon Inlet.

Finally, by 1940, Quarters Channel had completely closed up. This completed the connection of Peters Beach with Brigantine Island.
