Petersburg was once a small community in Kern County, California. It is now considered a ghost town, which means it's a place where people used to live but don't anymore. Petersburg was also known by the names Petersburgh and Greenhorn.

Where Was Petersburg Located?

Petersburg was located in a high area, about 4,731 feet (1,442 meters) above sea level. It was near a stream called Greenhorn Creek. You could find it about 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) west-northwest of a place called Miracle Hot Springs. Even in 1956, Petersburg still appeared on maps.

A Brief History

Petersburg was a very small settlement. It even had its own post office for a few years, from 1858 to 1863. This means people living there could send and receive mail.

How Petersburg Got Its Name

The town was named after a person called Peter Gardett. He was an early merchant, which means he owned a shop or business in the area when the settlement was first starting.
