In 2010, about 954 people lived in Pettit. This was a big jump from the year 2000, when the population was 771. The community got its name from Mark and Eliza Pettit, who were among the first people to own land there.

The community is located near Lake Tenkiller on its southeast side. There's a spot called Pettit Bay Public Use Area right across the lake from the main community, which is a great place for outdoor activities.
