Built c. 13th century

Petty Castle was an old castle located near Petty in the Highland region of Scotland. It was a special kind of castle called a motte-and-bailey castle. This means it had a big mound of earth (the motte) with a tower on top, and a walled courtyard below (the bailey).

Petty Castle was the main stronghold for the area known as the Barony of Petty. In the 1200s, a powerful family called the de Moravia family owned the land and the castle.

What Happened to Petty Castle?

By the 1500s, it seems the original motte-and-bailey castle was no longer the main building. It was then known as Halhill.

A Raid and New Owners

The castle and lands of Petty were once raided by the Mackintosh family. After this, the lands were given to a person named John Ogilvy of Strathearn.

Contents of the Castle

In 1517, a list was made of what was inside Petty Castle. It showed that the castle had many useful things.

  • Tools for building, like masonry tools.
  • Weapons such as halberds, axes, and special long sticks called Jedburgh staves.
  • Bows and arrows, and armour for protection.
  • Materials for making clothes, like wool and linen cloth and yarn.
  • Clothes and furniture for living.
  • Five barrels of wine.
  • Tools for farming, including ploughs.

This list helps us imagine what life was like in the castle long ago!

Later History and Nearby Castles

Over time, the ownership of Petty changed hands.

New Owners and a Queen's Gift

The Mackintosh family was later given the lands of Petty. Then, in 1561, Mary, Queen of Scots, gave the lands to her half-brother, James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray. This happened after she returned to Scotland.

Castle Stuart is Built

A new castle, called Castle Stuart, was built nearby to the south-east. This new castle was finished in 1625. Petty Castle eventually became a ruin.
