Peyton H. Colquitt (1831-1863) was an important officer from Georgia during the American Civil War. He was a colonel in the Confederate army. Sadly, he was badly hurt in the Battle of Chickamauga and passed away a couple of days later.

Early Life and Family

Peyton H. Colquitt was born on October 7 or 8, 1831. His birthplace was Campbell County, Georgia. He was the second son of Walter T. Colquitt and Nancy Holt.

His father, Walter T. Colquitt, was a preacher who traveled a lot. He later became a politician. He was elected to serve Georgia in the United States House of Representatives. After that, he became a U.S. Senator.

Peyton's older brother was Alfred Holt Colquitt. Alfred also became a famous person. He was a General in the Confederate Army. Later, he served as a U.S. Senator for Georgia. He also became the Governor of Georgia.

Education and Early Career

Peyton Colquitt went to a local school called an academy. After that, he was accepted into the United States Military Academy. This is a famous military school in West Point, New York. He was part of the class that was supposed to graduate in 1853. However, he left the academy in 1853 before finishing his studies.

An old newspaper from 1863 said that Peyton Colquitt was once the editor of a newspaper called the Columbus Times. He also served in the Georgia Legislature. This means he was a representative and a senator for his state.

Military Service in the Civil War

When the American Civil War began, Peyton Colquitt joined the Confederate army. He was made a captain of a group called the Columbus Light Guard from Georgia.

He fought in one of the very first battles of the war. This was the Battle of Sewell's Point. Later, in 1862, he took command of the 46th Georgia Infantry Regiment. He became a colonel of this regiment.

Colonel Colquitt fought in the major Battle of Chickamauga. This battle took place on September 20, 1863. During the battle, he was leading a group of soldiers called a brigade. He was badly wounded during the fighting. He died two days later, on September 22, 1863.

Burial

Peyton Colquitt is buried in Linwood Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia. His wife, Julia Flournoy (Hurt) Colquitt, was buried near him after she passed away in 1891.

Legacy and Honors

After the war ended, people remembered Colonel Colquitt. A special memorial was put up for him. It is located near the spot where he was wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga.
