Phil Younghusband (born on August 4, 1987) is a famous former professional football player. He mostly played as a striker, scoring goals for his team. Sometimes, he also played as a midfielder, helping control the game.
Phil is best known for playing with the Philippines national team from 2006 to 2019. He was the team's captain from 2014 to 2019. He holds the record for playing the most games and scoring the most goals for the Philippines.
He helped the Philippines reach the semi-finals of the AFF Championship four times. These were in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2018. He also played in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, which was the first time the Philippines national team ever made it to that big tournament.
Phil was born in Surrey, England. His father is English and his mother is Filipino. He started playing football at a young age in the youth academy of Chelsea. He became a professional player in 2005 with Chelsea's reserve team. He also spent some time playing for a Danish club called Esbjerg fB on loan.
In 2009, Phil moved to the Philippines. He first played for San Beda. Then, in 2011, he joined Loyola Meralco Sparks, which later became Meralco Manila. He played most of his professional career with this team.
With Loyola Meralco Sparks, he won the United Football League Cup in 2013. He also won the PFF National Men's Club Championship in the 2014–15 season. Phil was a great goalscorer. Playing for Clubs
Chelsea Football Club
Phil joined the famous Chelsea football club when he was just nine years old. He became a professional player in March 2005. Phil was the top scorer for Chelsea's youth team in the 2003–04 season. He also scored many goals for the reserve team. In the 2005–06 season, he played 21 games for the Chelsea reserve team and scored five goals.
Loan to Esbjerg
On August 30, 2007, Phil went to play for a Danish club called Esbjerg fB on loan. This meant he played for them for a short time. He returned to Chelsea in January 2008. After his contract with Chelsea ended in the summer of 2008, he moved to the Philippines.
Playing in the Philippines
San Beda FC
In April 2011, Phil and his brother James announced they would play for San Beda FC. This was for the 2011 National Club Championships. They were very happy to be professional football players again in the Philippines.
Loyola Meralco Sparks
In August 2011, Phil and James joined Loyola Meralco Sparks. They signed a three-year contract with the team. Phil played his first game for Loyola in October 2011. He scored an amazing seven goals in one game, helping his team win 15–1.
In the 2011 UFL Cup final, Loyola lost. However, Phil won the Golden Boot Award because he scored 25 goals in just 7 games. He continued to score many goals in the league. In one game, he scored five goals in a 14–0 win. Overall, he scored 23 league goals and 49 goals for Loyola in his first season.
Phil was still with the club when it became F.C. Meralco Manila in 2017. After about six years with the team, Phil and James decided to move to another club.
Davao Aguilas
Phil and his brother James officially joined Davao Aguilas on August 2, 2017. They played for Davao Aguilas until the end of 2018. The club then decided to close its senior team.
Playing for the Philippines National Team
In 2005, the Philippine Football Federation found out that Phil could play for the Philippines. This happened because someone playing a video game called Football Manager discovered his Filipino background. Phil and his brother James were then asked to join the national team.
Phil played for the Philippines Under-23 national team in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games. He scored two goals in a game against Malaysia. He also played for the senior Philippine national team. He scored six goals in four games during the ASEAN Football Championship qualifiers, becoming the top scorer.
In the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup, Phil scored two goals against India. This was the first time the Philippines had ever beaten India. He also scored against Tajikistan, helping the Philippines reach the semi-finals for the first time. The Philippines finished third in the tournament, which was a great achievement. Phil won the Golden Boot award for scoring six goals in the tournament.
On March 27, 2018, Phil scored his 50th goal for the national team. He scored it from a penalty kick in a game against Tajikistan. This win helped the Philippines qualify for their first ever AFC Asian Cup in 2019. Phil played in all three group games for the Philippines in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
Retirement from Football
On November 18, 2019, Phil Younghusband announced that he was retiring from playing football. He shared this news on his Instagram account.
Personal Life
Phil Younghusband married Margaret Hall in July 2019. They got engaged in December 2017. Their wedding took place in England. Margaret Hall is a model who is both Filipino and Scottish. Phil and Margaret welcomed their son on June 12, 2020.
