Philip Amadas (1550–1618) was an English naval commander and explorer. He lived during the time of Elizabethan England, when Queen Elizabeth I ruled. Amadas played an important part in England's early efforts to explore and settle North America.

Who Was Philip Amadas?

Philip Amadas was born in 1550 in Kingston upon Hull, England. He came from a rich family that was involved in trade. Not much is known about his early life. However, he became a skilled sailor and explorer. His work helped England begin its journey to build colonies in the Americas.

Exploring North America

Amadas was a key figure in the first English trips to North America. These trips aimed to find good places for future settlements.

The 1584 Voyage

In 1584, Philip Amadas joined Arthur Barlowe on an important journey. They sailed to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This trip was meant to explore the land and see if it was suitable for a colony.

  • They left England on April 27, 1584.
  • Amadas was the captain of a ship called the Bark Ralegh.
  • Simon Fernandes was the ship's master and pilot.

This voyage helped them find Roanoke Island. They decided this island would be a good spot for future English colonies.

Admiral of Virginia

After the 1584 voyage, Amadas returned to England. He reported what they had found to Sir Walter Raleigh. Raleigh was a powerful figure who planned the English settlements. For his efforts, Raleigh made Amadas the Admiral of Virginia in 1585.

When Amadas and Barlowe shared their discoveries, Queen Elizabeth I was very pleased. She decided to name the new land "Virginia" in honor of herself, as she was known as the "Virgin Queen."

Amadas also took part in the 1585 Roanoke voyages. These trips were part of England's ongoing attempts to establish a presence in North America.
