Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Philip Stubbs (around 1555 – around 1610) was an English writer who created many short books and pamphlets. He wrote about different topics, often sharing his strong opinions on society and how people lived.

Who Was Philip Stubbs?

Philip Stubbs was born around 1555. He came from Cheshire, a county in England, possibly near a town called Congleton. Some people believe he studied at important universities like Cambridge and Oxford, but he didn't finish a degree. He might have been related to another writer named John Stubbs. In 1586, he married Katherine Emmes.

What Did Philip Stubbs Write About?

Philip Stubbs started his writing career in 1581 with a type of printed sheet called a broadside. He became known as one of a group of writers who created popular songs and stories, like William Elderton and Thomas Deloney.

His most famous book, published in 1583, was called The Anatomie of Abuses. In this book, Stubbs strongly criticized many things about life in his time. He wrote about people's manners, their customs, the fun activities they enjoyed, and even the clothes they wore. He especially didn't like the theatre, gambling, and the latest fashion trends. Even today, people read The Anatomie of Abuses to learn a lot about what people thought and how they lived back then.

In 1591, Stubbs wrote a book called A Christal Glass for Christian Women. He wrote this book to honor his wife, Katherine, who had passed away at a young age of 19. This book was very popular and helped people think about how to live a good Christian life and prepare for death. After this, he wrote other books that focused on religious ideas. Philip Stubbs passed away around 1610, when he was about 55 years old.
