Philip Twisleton was an important English soldier who lived a long time ago, from about 1616 to 1678. He came from a wealthy family in North Yorkshire. During a big conflict called the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, he became a high-ranking officer, a colonel, in the New Model Army. This army fought for the Parliament against the King.
Early Life and Family Background
Philip Twisleton was born around 1616. His father was John Twisleton, who owned land in Drax and Barley, Yorkshire. His family also had a home called Horsmans Place in Dartford. Philip's mother was Margaret, the daughter of William Constable.
Philip had two brothers who also became soldiers. His older brother, John, was born in 1614. His younger brother, George, was born in 1618. Both of them fought for the Parliament, just like Philip.
Military Career and Achievements
Philip Twisleton became a colonel in the New Model Army. This army was a very important fighting force during the English Civil War. He led a group of cavalry, which are soldiers who fight on horseback.
Philip was a very successful soldier. Because of his bravery and leadership, Oliver Cromwell, who was the leader of England at the time, made him a knight. This happened on February 1, 1658. Being a knight was a great honor.
However, after Cromwell's time ended and the King returned to power in 1660, Philip's knighthood was taken away. This was common for many people who had been honored by Cromwell.
Philip Twisleton's Family Life
Philip Twisleton married a woman named Ann Brograve. Her father was John Brograve, and her mother was Hannah Barnardiston.
Philip and Ann had two sons:
- John (who died in 1721) was their oldest son. He inherited Horsmans Place from his uncle John. John never had any children of his own.
- Thomas became a reverend, which means he was a religious leader. He had at least one child, a daughter named Mary.
