When he was a boy, he went to Wisbech Grammar School. Later, he studied engineering at Faraday House in London. He was known for his clever inventions and for leading important groups, especially in electricity and even ice hockey!

Helping During Wartime

Philip Hunter played a big part in both the First World War and the Second World War. During the First World War, he worked as an engineering director. His job was to help with experiments and research for the navy's anti-submarine division. This meant he helped find ways to protect ships from enemy submarines. Because of his great work, he was given a special award called a CBE in 1920. This award is given to people who have done something amazing for their country.

In the Second World War, Philip Hunter invented something very clever called the buoyant cable. This special cable helped defeat the dangerous magnetic mine. Magnetic mines were bombs placed in the water that could explode when a ship came near. His invention was a big help in keeping ships safe during the war.

A Leader in Electrical Engineering

Philip Hunter was also a very respected expert in electricity. In 1933, he became the president of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. This is a very important group for people who work with electricity. It's like being the leader of a club for the smartest electrical engineers!

Later, in 1951, he was made an "honorary fellow" of the same institution. This was a special honor given to him for his "outstanding service" to the world of electricity and to the institution itself. It meant he had done incredibly well and helped the electrical industry a lot.

His Love for Ice Hockey

Besides his work with engineering, Philip Hunter had a passion for ice hockey. He was the president of the British Ice Hockey Association for a long time, from 1934 to 1958. That's over 20 years!
