Addington is a village and area located in south London, England. It is part of the London Borough of Croydon. Addington is about 11 miles (17.8 km) south of Charing Cross, which is a central point in London. It is also about 4 miles (6.4 km) south-east of the main part of Croydon.

Addington's Past: A Look at History

In 1086, a very old survey called the Domesday Book mentioned this area. It was known as Edintona or Eddintone back then. People believe Addington got its name from Edda, who was a Saxon landowner. In the Domesday Book, two important estates, called manors, were listed here.

Addington Palace: A Grand Home

Addington Palace is a very old and grand building. It used to be called Addington Place or Addington Farm. This large house stands out in the village, near St Mary the Blessed Virgin Church.

A wealthy man named Barlow Trecothick built the main part of the Palace in 1780. He was from Boston, Massachusetts, in America. After moving to England, he became a Member of Parliament and even the Lord Mayor of the City of London.

Later, the Addington house was bought by the Archbishops of Canterbury. These are the most important leaders of the Church of England. They used Addington Palace as their country home for many years. From 1954 to 1996, it was home to the Royal School of Church Music.

How Addington Grew

In the 19th century, parts of the Addington estate were sold. This land later became what we know as New Addington.

Over time, Addington changed a lot. In the early 1900s, it was part of the county of Surrey. But in 1925, it became part of the County Borough of Croydon. Then, in 1965, Addington joined the larger area of Greater London. This meant it became part of the London Borough of Croydon.

Even though Addington is now part of a big city, it still feels like a village. You can find old houses and buildings there. There's even a blacksmith's forge from the 1740s that still makes metal items. The local pub, The Cricketers, is also a historic spot.
