Sir Philip Wentworth (born around 1424 – died 18 May 1464) was an important English knight and courtier. He lived during a time of great change in England, known as the Wars of the Roses. Philip Wentworth was a great-grandfather of Queen Jane Seymour, who became the third wife of King Henry VIII. He was executed in Middleham, Yorkshire.

Sir Philip Wentworth's Life and Role

Philip Wentworth was the son of Roger Wentworth and Margery le Despencer. His mother was an important heiress, meaning she inherited a lot of land and wealth.

Sir Philip held several important positions in the royal court. He was an Usher of the King's Chamber, meaning he helped manage the King's personal rooms. He was also an Esquire of the Body, a close attendant to the King. He served as the King's Carver, who would cut the King's meat at meals.

He also had important roles outside the court. He was the Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk from 1459 to 1460. A sheriff was like a chief law enforcement officer for a county. He was also a Knight of the Shire for Suffolk, which meant he represented Suffolk in Parliament. Sir Philip was also in charge of Clare and Llanstephen castles as their Constable. He was also the Chief Steward of the Honour of Clare, managing its lands.

During the Wars of the Roses, Sir Philip Wentworth supported the House of Lancaster. This was one of the two main families fighting for control of the English throne. He fought in the army of King Henry VI. This army was defeated at the Battle of Hexham on 15 May 1464. Sir Philip was captured during this battle. Three days later, on 18 May 1464, he was executed in Middleham, Yorkshire.
