Sir Henry Wentworth was an important English nobleman who lived a long time ago. He was born around 1448 and passed away between 1499 and 1501. He is famous for being the grandfather of Jane Seymour, who became the third wife of King Henry VIII. This also means he was the great-grandfather of their son, Edward VI, who later became King of England. Sir Henry was also known as a Knight of the Bath.

Life of Sir Henry Wentworth

Henry Wentworth was born around 1448. He was the only son of Sir Philip Wentworth and Mary Clifford. His father, Sir Philip, was a courtier who served King Henry VI during the Wars of the Roses. These were a series of battles between two important families in England. Sadly, Sir Philip was captured and died in 1464.

Even though his father had been on the losing side, Henry Wentworth was forgiven by the King in 1462. Two years later, he got back all the lands and property that had belonged to his father.

Henry Wentworth was an active person in his time. In 1475, he traveled to France with the army of King Edward IV. Later, in 1489, he was honored as a Knight of the Bath. This was a special title given to important people. He also held several official jobs, like being an Esquire of the Household and a Knight of the Body. He served as a Knight of the Shire for Yorkshire, which meant he represented the area in government. He was also the High Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1482, and the High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1489 and 1492. A High Sheriff was a very important local official.

Sir Henry Wentworth's Family

Sir Henry Wentworth was married twice and had several children with his first wife.

He first married Anne Say around 1470. Anne passed away before 1494. Together, they had two sons and four daughters:

  • Sir Richard Wentworth, who had many children of his own.
  • Edward Wentworth.
  • Elizabeth Wentworth, who married Sir Roger Darcy. She later married Sir Thomas Wyndham and then John Bourchier. She had children who became important figures.
  • Margery Wentworth, who married Sir John Seymour. Their daughter was Jane Seymour, who became Queen of England as the third wife of King Henry VIII. Jane Seymour was also the mother of King Edward VI.
  • Dorothy Wentworth.
  • Jane Wentworth.

Sir Henry Wentworth married a second time to Elizabeth Neville in 1494. Elizabeth was a widow and the daughter of a powerful nobleman. They did not have any children together. Elizabeth passed away in 1517.

Death and Burial

Sir Henry Wentworth made his will on August 17, 1499. His will was officially approved on February 27, 1501. This means he likely passed away sometime between those two dates. He was probably buried with his first wife, Anne, at Newhouse Abbey in Lincolnshire.
