Anne Say (born c. 1453 – died between 1484 and 1494) was an important English noblewoman. She became a Baroness when she married Sir Henry Wentworth around 1470. Anne was the daughter of Sir John Say and Elizabeth Cheney, Lady Say. She is most famous for being the grandmother of Jane Seymour, who became the third wife of King Henry VIII of England. This also means Anne was the great-grandmother of King Edward VI.

Anne Say's Early Life and Family

Anne Say was born around 1453. Her father, Sir John Say, was a very active politician. He represented Hertfordshire in Parliament many times. He was even chosen to be the Speaker of Parliament twice. He also held important roles like under-Treasurer of the Exchequer and Keeper of the Great Wardrobe.

Anne's mother was Elizabeth Cheney, Lady Say. Through her mother, Anne was related to important Welsh figures. Anne also had a half-sister named Elizabeth Tilney. It's interesting to note that both Anne and Elizabeth would become grandmothers to three of King Henry VIII's wives! Elizabeth was the grandmother of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. Anne Say, on the other hand, was the grandmother of Jane Seymour.

Anne had six other brothers and sisters:

  • Sir William Say (1452-1529)
  • Thomas Say
  • Leonard Say, who was a clerk
  • Mary Say, who married Sir Philip Calthorpe
  • Margaret Say, who married Thomas Sampson
  • Katherine Say, who married Thomas Bassingbourne

Anne's Marriage and Children

Around February 25, 1470, Anne Say married Sir Henry Wentworth. He was a knight from Nettlestead, Suffolk. Henry's father, Sir Philip Wentworth, was beheaded after the Battle of Hexham.

Anne and Henry had six children together:

  • Sir Richard Wentworth: He married Anne Tyrrell and had three sons and five daughters. One of his sons was Thomas Wentworth, 1st Baron Wentworth.
  • Edward Wentworth
  • Elizabeth Wentworth (died after 1545): She married three times. Her first husband was Sir Roger Darcy, and they had a son named Thomas Darcy, 1st Baron Darcy of Chiche. She later married Sir Thomas Wyndham and then John Bourchier.
  • Margery Wentworth (born around 1478 – died around 1550): She married Sir John Seymour. They were the parents of Jane Seymour, who became the third wife of King Henry VIII. This makes Margery the grandmother of King Edward VI.
  • Dorothy Wentworth: She married Sir Robert Broughton.
  • Jane Wentworth

Death and Burial

We don't know the exact year Anne Say died. She was last mentioned in 1484. Her husband, Henry Wentworth, married his second wife in October 1494. This means Anne must have passed away sometime between 1484 and 1494. It is believed that she was buried at Newsham Abbey in Lincolnshire, England. Her husband was later buried there too, around 1499.
