Philip of Castile (born in Seville on May 28, 1292 – died in Madrid in April 1327) was a royal prince, known as an infante of Castile. He was the son of Sancho IV of Castile and María de Molina.
Philip held the title of Lord of Cabrera and Ribera, meaning he was the ruler of those lands. He also served as a regent for his young nephew, Alfonso XI of Castile, which meant he helped govern the kingdom until Alfonso was old enough to rule himself. Philip married his cousin, Margarita de la Cerda.
Early Life and Family
Philip of Castile was born into a very important family. His father, Sancho IV, was the King of Castile, and his mother, María de Molina, was the Queen. Being an infante meant he was a prince of the royal family.
He was born in the city of Seville in what was then the Crown of Castile. His family was part of the Castilian House of Ivrea, a noble family with a long history in the kingdom.
Role as Regent
One of Philip's most important jobs was being a regent. A regent is someone who rules a country when the king or queen is too young or unable to do so. Philip became a regent for his nephew, Alfonso XI.
This was a big responsibility because he had to help make important decisions for the kingdom. He worked to keep things stable and peaceful while Alfonso grew up.
Marriage and Later Years
Philip married his cousin, Margarita de la Cerda. Marriages between cousins were common among royal families at that time. This helped to keep power and land within the same family lines.
Philip lived to be 35 years old. He passed away in Madrid in April 1327. His life was spent serving his family and the kingdom of Castile.
