Philipp's Tennis Journey
Philipp Kohlschreiber had a long and successful career in tennis. He played in many tournaments around the world.
First Big Wins (2007-2008)
In 2007, Kohlschreiber won his first major title in Munich, Germany. He beat Mikhail Youzhny in the final. This made him the first German player to win that event since 1994.
He started 2008 by winning his second title in Auckland, New Zealand. He then had a big win at the Australian Open, beating world No. 6, Andy Roddick. Kohlschreiber hit a personal best of 32 aces in that match. He later reached the final of the Halle Open in Germany, but lost to the famous Roger Federer.
Grand Slam Highlights (2009-2012)
In 2009, Kohlschreiber surprised many by beating world No. 4, Novak Djokovic, at the French Open. He reached the fourth round there. At Wimbledon that year, he was one of the few players to win a set against Roger Federer, who went on to win the tournament.
In 2010, he reached the quarterfinals at the Monte-Carlo Masters. He also had a strong match against Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open.
Kohlschreiber won his third career title in 2011 at the Halle Open. He beat fellow German Philipp Petzschner in the final.
The year 2012 was a big one for him. He reached the semifinals of the Halle Open, where he famously defeated Rafael Nadal. Just a few weeks later, he made it to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time. This was his best result ever at a Grand Slam tournament. He also reached the fourth round of the US Open that year.
Later Career (2013-2022)
In 2013, he reached the fourth round of both the French Open and the US Open. He won another title in 2014 at the Düsseldorf Open.
In 2015, Kohlschreiber won the Kitzbühel Open in Austria. He continued to play well in Germany, winning the Munich Open for the third time in 2016.
A notable moment in 2017 was when he played against world No. 1, Andy Murray, in Dubai. Kohlschreiber had seven chances to win the match, but Murray saved them all in a very long tie-breaker. Kohlschreiber later won his 400th career match at the Indian Wells Masters. He also won the Kitzbühel Open again that year.
In 2018, he reached the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 event for the first time since 2010. He also made it to the fourth round of the US Open for the fifth time.
In 2019, he achieved a huge win at the Indian Wells Masters, beating world No. 1, Novak Djokovic. This was his first win against a current world No. 1 player.
He continued to play until 2022. He made his 68th Grand Slam appearance at the Australian Open that year. Philipp Kohlschreiber announced his retirement from professional tennis after the Wimbledon qualifying tournament in June 2022. He played his last match on the ATP Tour shortly after. As of July 2025, he is tied for 9th place in the list of most Grand Slam appearances ever, with 68.
How Philipp Played Tennis
Kohlschreiber was known as an "all-court" player. This means he was good at playing from all areas of the court, not just the back. He had strong shots from both his forehand and backhand sides. His forehand was a powerful weapon, and he often hit it in a way that made opponents move out of position.
His one-handed backhand was considered one of the best in tennis. He could hit it with power, spin, or a soft slice. He often used drop-shots during a rally to surprise his opponents. On grass courts, he sometimes used a "chip-and-charge" tactic, hitting a short shot and then rushing to the net. Because he had so many different shots, he was successful on all types of tennis surfaces.
Big Wins Against Top Players
Philipp Kohlschreiber had 25 wins against players who were ranked in the top 10 at the time of their match. Here are some of his most notable victories:
- In 2008, he beat Andy Roddick (ranked No. 6) at the Australian Open.
- In 2009, he defeated Novak Djokovic (ranked No. 4) at the French Open.
- In 2012, he beat Rafael Nadal (ranked No. 2) at the Halle Open.
- In 2018, he defeated Alexander Zverev (ranked No. 4) at the US Open.
